by Austin, grade 3

The Rufous Sided Towhee is a common backyard bird in North America. Towhees are large ground feeding sparrows. Its scientific name is Pipilo erythrophthalmus. You will most likely find this bird in brush or heavy undergrowth. They build their nests on the ground by streams. They build them out of bark strips, grass, of pine needles lined with grass. This bird has a white belly and a long round tail with white spots. It has red eyes with black spots. Its dark black head contrasts sharply with its reddish flanks. It is seven and one half inches long. It eats seeds and insects by kicking back leaves to find them. The bird's call is a slurred "chewink". The song is "Drink your tea". They can sing it for 7 - 12 minutes. This bird is never seen in flocks, but in pairs and families. It is also known as the Spotted Towhee and the Oregon Towhee.
