The Pine Sisken

by Chuck, grade 3

The Pine Siskin is a common bird in the Pacific Northwest. It is similar to a Goldfinch. You would be most likely to find the Pine Siskin high in Pine trees or jumping from treetop to treetop. Siskins have a deeply notched tail and slender sharp bill. It has a yellow spot on its winged tail. It is four and a half inches long. The Pine Siskin eats seeds from Conifers and Alders while hanging upside down from a tree branch. The bird's call is a wheezy voice that goes swi-sieee swi-sieee. Siskins like to fly with Gold Finches. They are highly social year round and are great wanderers. They move through valleys and mountains depending on food supply. Siskins are not on the list of endangered species.
