The Chocolate Lily is a wild flower commonly found in the mountains from
Washington State to California. Its scientific name is Fritillaria lanceolata.
The Chocolate Lily grows in moist clearings up to 5,000 feet. Its petals
are brownish purple molted with yellowish green spots. They are 1/2-3/4
inches long. Its six narrow leaves are 2-5 inches long. The Chocolate Lily
grows on a 8-30 inch stem. It blooms from February to June. It is also called
the Rice Root Lily because it grows from a bulb with tiny bulblets that
look like rice. A long time ago people would gather them up and eat the
bulbs.
