Mother Joseph

Grade 3 version

Mother Joseph was a Catholic nun in the Pacific Northwest. Her order was called the Sisters of Providence. She was an architect. She built the Providence Academy and other buildings in Clark County. Mother Joseph learned to build from her father when she was a little girl.

Grade 4 version

In 1852, the Bishop asked five sisters To go to Vancouver. So, five sisters were selected. The selected ones were: Sister Praxades, Sister Blandine, Sister Theirault and Sister Joseph.
In Vancouver, Sister Joseph and a few other nuns formed a group called ``The Sisters of Charity, Servants of the Poor.''
A litte bit after Christmas Sister Joseph began to build a convent. On February 22, they moved into the now room, with four windows. On March 17, 1857, a woman with a child came to the convent. The mother was unable to take care of, her child, Emily Lake. She became the first orphan of the sisters of Providnce.
