There were many forest fires called the Yacolt Burn. The three biggest were in 1902, 1910, and 1929.
1902
The 1902 fire started in Skamania at 3:00 PM. It looked similar to fog and
in the night it looked like the Northern Lights. It made a huge rumbling
sound. The fire stopped with the rain.

1910
This fire started from a spark from a train engine. The people escaped by
train. People lost their homes and the army gave them blankets and large
tents to live in.

1929
The fire started from a fire that was assumed to be under control by the
state's fledgling forestry department. People lost their lives.
The fires left very little old growth fir and cedar. The view is now mostly open and many berries grow there.
