Esther Skarstedt Morgan was a pioneer teacher all around Vancouver. In 1899, the Skarstedt family moved from Chicago with three small children. When she moved to Vancouver, she did not know English. When they arrived at Battle Ground her mother died of typhoid. Mrs. Matt helped take care of the children. Esther had a brother named Marcus. There in Maple Grove, Marcus and Esther made a treehouse and played while they listened to their father play the violin. Her father skilled in photography
