La Center was founded in 1852. The first settler to La Center was a Hudsons
Bay Co. employee. The sternwheeler Leona, which sunk in 1912, is about 50
feet from the La Center bridge. After the fur trading years steamboats from
the Columbia River docked there to unload and load.
