Barberton School

By Elica, grade 4

The Barberton School started as the St. John's school. The land was donated by Mr. and Mrs.Thornton. A goup of homesteaders met in a nearby building in 1871 to plan the school. G.S. Coffee was the firstteacher at St. John's. $35.28 was the only money that the school had. When the second St.John school opened it was 1901. They changedthe name to Barberton but the old settlers did not like the name. The school had two classroom's, a closet, and a shelf for lunches. Today the building is across from my house.
