Rush Mats

by Brittany, grade 3

Rush mats are made of bulrush and cattail. They were gathered in July and August and then they were dried. Mat creasers are used to flatten the seams of the mat. The seams are threaded with a needle, which is made of bone or wood. They are used to make floor mats, sleeping mats, coverings for shelters, eating mats and partitions.
