Chief Cassino was chief at the Wakanisi Village. That was located at the mouth of the Willamette River on Sauvie island. When Fort Vancouver was set up, Chief Cassino was put in charge of all Indian affairs. At the fort he was treated with respect. At the fort he was given the honor of waiting for ships that traveled up the river and firing the little cannon that was used as the signal gun. In the early 1830's, a devastating disease struck the Indian tribes. Most of his family died. Chief Cassino survived a few years later. He died on December 10, 1848.
